What this tool is for
Base64 rewrites data using only ordinary letters and digits, so it can travel somewhere that would mangle anything else, such as inside a URL, a config file or an email header. It is an encoding, not a lock: anyone can turn it straight back, and it hides nothing from anybody.

Questions
Is base64 a form of encryption?
No, and treating it as one is a genuine mistake. Anyone can decode it in seconds. Never use it to hide a password or a key.
Why does encoding make things longer?
Because it spends four characters for every three it started with. Expect roughly a third more than you put in.
What do the equals signs at the end mean?
They are padding, added so the result divides evenly into blocks of four. One or two of them at the end is normal.
Why does my decoded text come out as nonsense?
Usually the string was cut short, had a space broken into it by copying, or was never base64 to begin with.
