What this tool is for
This converts an amount between currencies at the current published rate, and shows how that rate has moved recently so you can see whether today is unusual. The figure it gives is the mid-market rate, which is the honest reference point rather than the price anybody will actually offer you.

Questions
Why is this more than my bank gave me?
Because this is the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling. A bank or bureau takes a margin off that, and sometimes a fee on top, which is the difference you are seeing.
How current are the rates?
They come from published daily reference rates, so they suit a decision or an estimate rather than a trade that turns on the minute.
Does this one need an internet connection?
Yes, unlike most tools here. Exchange rates change daily, so the current ones have to be fetched from a public rates service.
Is the amount I type sent anywhere?
No. Only the rates come in. The conversion itself is worked out in this browser tab, so what you are converting stays private.
