What this tool is for

This gives the price after a discount and what you save, and works the other way too: given the old price and the new one, it says what percentage off that really is. The second is the useful one in a sale, where the claimed discount and the actual one do not always agree.

How to work out a sale price

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the percentage off, or the price it has been reduced to.
  3. Read what you pay and what you save.

Questions

How do I check a claimed discount is real?

Enter the old and new prices and read the percentage back. That is the figure to compare against what the label says.

How do two discounts stack together?

The second comes off the already reduced price, not the original. Half off then a further 20 per cent is 60 per cent off in total, not 70.

Does the discount apply before or after tax?

Normally before, so tax is charged on the reduced amount. To see that split, put the discounted price through the add or remove tax tool.

Is anything I type recorded?

No. It stays in this browser tab and is gone when you close the page.
