What this tool is for
Compressing makes a photo smaller in file size while it stays the same size on screen. It is what a page needs when an upload form rejects anything over a few megabytes, and what a website needs when photos straight off a phone are making it slow to load.
How to compress an image

- Move the quality slider. Lower quality means a smaller file.
- Check the preview against the original, then save it.

How much quality will I lose?
Less than you would expect. A photo can usually drop to around a third of its size before most people can tell, and the preview shows you the result before you save anything.
Does this change the width and height?
No. The picture keeps its dimensions and only the file gets lighter. To change the dimensions as well, use the resize tool.
Which formats can I compress?
JPEG, PNG and WebP. A photograph saved as PNG often shrinks dramatically by moving it to JPEG or WebP, which the change image format tool will do.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The picture is read and rewritten in this browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere, so personal photos stay on your device.
