What this tool is for
Changing the format rewrites a picture as a different kind of file: JPEG, PNG or WebP. Each is good at something different, and the right one usually depends on what the picture is rather than what you prefer. Photographs belong in JPEG or WebP; logos and screenshots with flat colour and sharp edges belong in PNG.

Which format should I pick?
For photographs, JPEG for anything that has to work everywhere, or WebP for a smaller file on the web. For logos, screenshots and anything needing a transparent background, PNG.
Will a transparent background survive?
Only in a format that supports it. PNG and WebP keep transparency; JPEG cannot, so anything see-through becomes solid when you convert to it.
Does converting lose quality?
Moving to JPEG or WebP re-encodes the picture, which loses a little. Moving to PNG does not lose anything, though the file is usually larger.
Does the picture leave my device?
No. The conversion happens in this browser tab, so nothing is uploaded.
