What this tool is for
This reads the words in a picture and hands them back as text you can select, search and paste. It is what gets a photographed page, a screenshot someone sent instead of the file, or a sign you took a picture of, out of the image and into something you can work with.
How to get text out of a picture
- Add the photo or screenshot holding the text.
- Wait while the words are read. A busy image takes longer.
- Copy the text that comes back.
Questions
Will it read handwriting?
Usually not. This is built for typed and printed words. Neat block capitals sometimes come through, but ordinary handwriting rarely does.
How do I get a better result?
Give it a sharp, straight, well lit picture where the text is reasonably large. Blur, shadow and a steep angle cause most mistakes.
Should I check the text afterwards?
Yes. Reading is a best guess rather than a certainty, and numbers in particular are worth a second look before you rely on them.
Is my image sent to a server to be read?
No. The reading happens in this browser tab, so a photographed document with personal detail on it stays with you. The first time, the reading engine itself is downloaded, which is why it needs the internet.
